Colored by the Coloring Together artists. See gallery.

On dry land a seal looks a bit clumsy: it shuffles along slowly and settles in the sun as best it can. But put it in the water and everything changes, because there it moves like a dancer, spinning around and rising to breathe without any effort. That double life is what makes these seal coloring pages so special.

We gathered seals of many kinds: a white-furred pup, a leopard seal swimming, an elephant seal sunbathing and even a seal playing with a ball. You can paint them in real greys and browns or invent a turquoise seal, a pink one or any color you like best.

At Coloring Together we love watching the gallery fill up with seals of every color, like a coast full of life. When you finish yours, send it to us so we can add it: we would love to see it rest among the whole colony.

Why color seal pictures?

Did you know the seal lives in some of the coldest places on the planet without feeling cold? It has a thick layer of fat under its skin, called blubber, that wraps it up like a natural wetsuit. That is why it can swim among the ice with no trouble at all.

Coloring seals is a calm way to get to know them better. While you choose the grey of its back, the white of its belly or the blue of the water around it, your hand loosens up and your mind relaxes, just like a seal floating on its back.

We spread plenty of fun facts about seals among the drawings, so every page you color leaves you with something new to share. Shall we dive in?

  1. Seals have a thick layer of fat under their skin, called blubber, that works like a natural coat and keeps them warm even in almost freezing water.
  2. There are more than 30 species of seals in the world. The biggest is the southern elephant seal: a male can be 5 meters long and weigh more than 3,000 kilos, like a big car.
  3. Seals can hold their breath for a very long time underwater. Some dive for more than half an hour at a stretch before coming back up for air.
  4. Seal whiskers are not just for show: they pick up the vibrations fish leave behind as they swim, so seals can track their food even in dark water.
  5. Harp seal pups are born with a soft white coat that camouflages them on the snow. After a few weeks they swap it for a silvery grey one.
  6. A mother seal’s milk is so rich in fat that the pup gains weight super fast: some can double their weight in just one or two weeks.
  7. True seals have no external ears, just two tiny holes on the sides of the head. That is how you tell them apart from sea lions, which do have ears.
  8. The leopard seal is a fast hunter of Antarctica. It chases fish and penguins, and is one of the few seals that also hunts smaller seals.
  9. On land seals move by dragging themselves on their belly, and sometimes they slide down the snow like a slide. In the water, though, they are super fast.
