  1. Rabbits are social animals. In the wild they live in hierarchical groups of up to 10 adults of both sexes and their young.
  2. With the right care, rabbits can live up to 12 years in captivity. The longest-lived rabbit in history is said to have lived to 18 years. Incredible!
  3. In the wild, rabbits rarely live past 3 years of age. They are prey for many other animals, so reaching adulthood is a real challenge.
  4. Did you know that baby rabbits are called “kits”? Adorable!
  5. When they are happy and energetic, rabbits perform a series of movements known as “binkies”. These are fun, joyful jumps with twists and kicks in the air. They are a delight to watch!
  6. Rabbits are cecotrophs. This means that they very often eat their own droppings, specifically the ones called “cecotropes”. They do this to absorb nutrients that are essential for their development.
  7. In the wild, rabbits live in underground burrows known as “warrens”. The cages or enclosures built to raise or keep rabbits as pets are also called this.
  8. Rabbits don't like to bathe! They groom themselves very often and are quite clean, so if you have one of these furry little pets, you should only bathe it if the vet recommends it.
  9. A rabbit's teeth never stop growing! They can grow as much as 0.3 centimeters per week. To prevent their teeth from overgrowing, rabbits need to gnaw and chew on things. If you have a rabbit at home, watch out for your cables and furniture!
  10. Rabbits are prey animals. They belong to the “Primary Consumers” level of all the food chains they are part of.
  11. Rabbits are crepuscular animals. This means that their most active times of day are at dawn and at dusk.
  12. Rabbits can run at a top speed of 40 kilometers per hour. Thanks to their graceful, agile and swift movements, they can escape from predators.
  13. Rabbits are professional jumpers! They can leap up to 1.5 meters high and 3 meters long. Amazing!
  14. Rabbits are strict herbivores. They feed on a wide variety of leaves, stems, roots, flowers, grasses, fruits and vegetables.
  15. The largest rabbit litter in history was made up of 24 kits. Usually, each rabbit litter has between four and twelve babies. Cool!
  16. The biggest rabbit in the world was a Flemish giant rabbit. His name was Darius, and in April 2010 he was confirmed to measure 1.29 meters in length. He really was a huge ball of fluff!
  17. All domestic rabbit breeds belong to a single species: the common rabbit or European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus). This is the only living member of the genus Oryctolagus.
  18. A rabbit's pregnancy lasts between 28 and 32 days, and females can become pregnant again immediately after giving birth. There's a reason rabbits are famous for being experts at multiplying!
  19. Rabbits reach sexual maturity between 4 and 9 months of age. If you have pet rabbits, don't forget to have them spayed or neutered!
  20. Did you know that miscarriages, embryo reabsorptions and cannibalism of young are very common among rabbits? Pregnancy and the first days of life are very critical stages for these furry little ones.
  21. Did you know that rabbits can sleep with their eyes open? It's a defense mechanism they developed so they can always stay alert to possible predators. Amazing!
  22. Even though they may look a lot like hamsters and guinea pigs, rabbits are not rodents, because just like hares, they belong to the order of lagomorphs.
  23. Rabbits have excellent eyesight. In fact, this is their most developed sense. Because their eyes are located on the sides of their head, they have peripheral vision that covers nearly 360 degrees. Incredible!
  24. Did you know that rabbits are not able to vomit? A healthy rabbit's body does not allow it to regurgitate or throw up any food that has begun the digestion process.
  25. Did you know that a rabbit's set of teeth is made up of 28 teeth? They have 6 incisors, 10 premolars and 12 molars. Amazing!
  26. There are many rabbit breeds! Some of the most popular domestic breeds are Jersey Wooly, Lionhead, Mini Lop, Mini Rex, Angora, Vienna Blue, Vienna White, Dutch, Holland Lop and New Zealand.
