The first thing you notice about a hedgehog is its spines, those little points it wears all along its back like a crown of tiny needles. But lean in a little closer and you find the curious face, the damp little nose and those round eyes that make it impossible to resist. That mix of armored animal and gentle little creature is exactly what makes these hedgehog coloring pages so lovely.

We put together hedgehogs of every kind: one rolled up into a ball on a log, another walking on tiptoe, a realistic one with every spine drawn in, and several caught in small adventures, with umbrellas, scarves or a strawberry between their paws. You can color them in the usual browns and beiges or invent a fantasy hedgehog with purple or golden spines.

The most fun part, without a doubt, is the spines: try drawing them with short strokes, one next to the other, and watch how the hedgehog gains volume.

Why color hedgehog pictures?

The hedgehog is a small nocturnal mammal that lives in the woods, fields and gardens of Europe, Asia and Africa. Its back is covered with thousands of keratin spines, made of the very same material as our fingernails, and whenever something startles it, it rolls into a perfect ball to keep itself safe.

Coloring hedgehogs is a lovely excuse to slow down for a while. As you fill in spine after spine and choose the shade of that little nose, your breathing settles and your mind clears, as if the hedgehog were passing on its own quiet calm. For little ones it is good practice for patience and a steady hand; for grown-ups, a break away from the screens.

When you are done, at Coloring Together we would love you to add your hedgehog to the gallery, so it keeps filling up with tiny spines in every color.

  1. A single hedgehog can carry between 5,000 and 7,000 spines on its back. They are not made of bone: they are hardened hairs of keratin, the same material as our nails and hair.
  2. When it gets scared, a hedgehog rolls into a ball and hides its head and legs inside, leaving only the spines facing out. Hardly any predator dares to touch it then.
  3. Hedgehogs are nocturnal: they sleep by day and come out at dusk to hunt insects, slugs and worms. That is why many gardens welcome them as natural pest control.
  4. In cold places, hedgehogs hibernate through the winter. They lower their temperature and heartbeat so far that they look truly asleep, until the warm weather returns.
  5. Baby hedgehogs are called hoglets and are born with soft spines hidden under the skin, so they do not hurt their mother. Within a few hours those spines begin to show.
  6. Hedgehogs have poor eyesight but a very sharp sense of smell and hearing. They track down their food under the leaves almost entirely by scent.
  7. Their name says a lot about how they live: they root through hedges looking for food and make little grunts like a piglet. That is exactly where hedge-hog comes from.
