You have probably heard that ostriches bury their heads in the sand when they get scared. It is one of the most famous made-up stories in the whole animal world, because they never actually do it: they lower their heads to the ground to turn their eggs or pick up food, and from far away it looks like burying. What is really true is even more amazing, and that is exactly why we put together these ostrich coloring pages.

Picture a bird as tall as a door, one that cannot fly but runs faster than a car in the city: that is the ostrich, the biggest bird there is. Here you will meet it in many shapes, from a sweet wide-eyed version to one sprinting full speed across the desert, with a whole family and its chicks along the way.

There is no need to hurry when you color it. That round belly and long neck give you plenty of room to try out colors, so take your time and enjoy every stretch.

One more thing: here at Coloring Together we have a gallery where the drawings kids send us end up. When you finish your ostrich, snap a photo and share it, so it can join the flock and lots of people get to see it.

Ostriches coloring pages

Why is coloring ostriches so much fun?

The ostrich is an African bird of the savanna and, even though it cannot fly, it holds several records under its wing: it is the tallest, the heaviest and the fastest runner of all the birds in the world. It uses those big wings to brake, turn and keep its balance while it runs.

An ostrich is a gift for anyone who colors, because there is so much room to play: the round belly calls for one big, even color, the thin legs ask for a steady hand, and that very long neck is perfect for trying a gentle fade. There is plenty of space to change your mind and start over.

Under each drawing we left a different fact, so by the time you put your pencils away you will know things about the ostrich you did not know this morning. Shall we begin?

Learn while coloring Ostriches

  1. The ostrich is the largest and heaviest bird in the world: it can stand almost three meters tall and weigh as much as two grown-ups together.
  2. It cannot fly, but it is the fastest runner of all birds: it reaches 70 kilometers per hour without breaking a sweat.
  3. It lays the largest eggs of any bird alive today. A single ostrich egg weighs about the same as 24 chicken eggs.
  4. It is the only bird with just two toes on each foot. Most birds have three or four.
  5. Its eyes are about 5 centimeters across, bigger than its brain and the largest of any land animal.
  6. The story about burying its head in the sand is a myth: it actually lowers its head to the ground to arrange its eggs or pick up food.
  7. One kick is enough to defend it even from a lion. Its leg is so strong that it is its best weapon.
  8. It lives in Africa, in savannas and deserts, and can go a long time without drinking because it gets water from the plants it eats.
