It swims slowly, so to defend itself it does not flee: it puffs up by swallowing water until it triples its size and pushes out spikes that make it impossible to bite. - When it gets scared, the pufferfish swallows water until it swells like a balloon. It becomes so big and round that almost no predator can eat it.
- Its scientific name, Tetraodontidae, means four teeth. It has only four large, joined teeth, which it uses to crack the shells of crabs and snails.
- Many pufferfish are poisonous: their body holds a substance that protects them from anything that tries to eat them, so they have almost no enemies.
- In Japan there is a dish made with pufferfish called fugu. Only chefs with a special license can cook it, because it has to be done with the greatest care.
- The pufferfish has no scales. Instead, its skin is covered with tiny spikes that rise up when it puffs out.
- There are more than 120 species of pufferfish. Almost all of them live in warm seas, but some live in freshwater rivers.
- A male pufferfish in Japan creates huge perfect circles in the sand on the seabed, like a giant drawing, to win over a female.
- Puffing up costs them a lot of energy, so they only do it when they are in danger. As soon as the scare passes, they let the water out and go back to their normal size.
- Its eyes can move each on their own, so it can watch what happens in front and behind almost at the same time.
