The letter L is the twelfth letter of the Spanish alphabet and its ninth consonant. It comes from Egyptian hieroglyphic writing, where it represented a leopard "labo", and this letter later passed into the Greek alphabet as "lambda". It took several years for this letter to evolve into what we know today.

When this letter stands alone it is known as "ele", but when a double L is used its sound becomes "elle", which is known as a digraph, because it is made up of two letters that represent a single sound.
