  1. According to the Royal Spanish Academy, the Spanish name of the H, 'hache', came through French and is related to 'hacca' from Vulgar Latin, which corresponded to an aspirated phoneme. The letter itself, however, has a much older origin: it comes from the Phoenician alphabet.
  2. In Italian, the letter H has no phonetic value, but it does have a function, and that is to be a diacritical grapheme, that is, a kind of graphic accent.
  3. In Vulgar Latin, the words we now know are written with H (for example: hermoso or hablar) were written with the letter F (fermoso, fablar).
  4. The letter H is the only grapheme that doesn't represent any sound. But even so, more than 2,000 words start with the letter H.
  5. It is believed that, after the Phoenicians, the Greeks took the letter H and gave it the pronunciation of a soft aspiration, similar to what we do today.
  6. In several Romance languages, such as Italian, the letter H doesn't represent any phonetic value.
  7. The letter H, unlike others, is a letter of origin, that is, it's an etymological and not phonetic consonant.
  8. It is believed that the first to use the letter H were the Phoenicians. They pronounced it like an aspirated J.
  9. It is said that the H, after passing from the Greeks, reached Latin, where its sound softened more, until it disappeared.
  10. In French, the letter H is silent, however, in some cases it can represent an aspiration, especially in words of Germanic origin.
  11. In some ancient texts, such as the Cantar del Mío Cid, you can find words that started with the letter F, but that today start with the letter H, for example: hermosa.
  12. There are words that Spanish has borrowed from other languages and whose H has been silenced, for example: alhaja, higiene, hamburguesa, harakiri, among others.
  13. The H is not silent for everyone. In fact, there are many Spanish speakers who use it and give it the sound of J, for example, in some areas of Spain, such as Western Andalusia, or in some places between Salamanca and Extremadura.
