This is the ninth letter of the Spanish alphabet, and it is also the third vowel. In Spanish it is also known as I latina to avoid confusing it with the y.

- In the era of the Romance languages, people started writing words in cursive, and it was common to confuse the cursive u and i. So to tell them apart, an accent mark was placed on top, and over time it ended up turning into a dot.
