Rome is the capital of Italy, and it has a very interesting history. It is a city with important historical and architectural treasures. Also, it is the heart of the Catholic religion, since Vatican City is located in Rome.

It is the most populous municipality in Italy, and the third most populous city in the European Union, with a population of 2,857,321 inhabitants. In addition, Rome was the center of one of the most important ancient civilizations in the world.

  1. For a long time Rome was the largest city in Europe. Did you know that? By 400 AD it had 700 thousand inhabitants, and after the 1st century it had more than a million inhabitants.
  2. We could consider Rome the capital of two countries, since it is the capital of Italy, but at the same time of Vatican City.
  3. The oldest bridge in Rome is the Fabricius Bridge, and it is more than 2,000 years old.
  4. In Rome there are more than 2,000 fountains of various shapes and sizes. It is surely a world record! Some have drinking water and others do not.
  5. Before Rome, the capital of the kingdom of Italy was Turin and Florence.
  6. The Conditum Paradoxum was one of the most popular drinks of Ancient Rome. It was prepared with wine, honey and spices.
  7. The Campo de' Fiori was in the past the center of public executions. How horrible!
  8. Stray cats have been protected by the laws of Rome since 1991. There are even people who can volunteer to care for and feed them.
  9. The Trevi Fountain is a fountain that collects around 3,000 euros per day, since it is a tradition to throw 3 coins into it. The government allocates these funds to charitable organizations.
  10. Giordano Bruno was a Roman philosopher executed as a heretic, since he claimed that the sun was a star. Today, there is a statue in his honor in the Campo de' Fiori square.
  11. It is said that Rome is built on 7 hills: Aventine, Capitoline, Caelian, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal and Viminal. But in reality there are more hills, the seven is more of a coined expression.
  12. In Rome gasoline is very expensive because of taxes, that is why they prefer scooters, since this way they not only save money, but it is also easier to get through traffic.
  13. There are around 900 churches in the city of Rome, however, the Great Synagogue is the only one that has a square shape instead of a circular one. What amazing architecture!
  14. "The Capitoline Museums" is the name of the first public museum in Rome, and it is the oldest in the entire world. It was founded in 1471 by Pope Sixtus IV.
  15. After gladiator fights were banned in the Roman Colosseum, the facilities were used as houses, warehouses and stables. But after a terrible earthquake that struck Rome, it fell into ruins and was used as a dump.
