The Native Americans were the original inhabitants of the American continent, which is why their descendants are the ones who hold the title of Indigenous or Native Americans.

One of the best-known theories about how America was populated is that the Indigenous peoples descend from groups of hunters of Siberian origin who migrated to America during the last Würm glaciation.

  1. Today, in Latin America there are around 42 million Indigenous people who safeguard the culture and history of the natives.
  2. The Navajo are the largest tribe in the United States, according to a census taken in 2015. They have a total of 300,460 members.
  3. The United States government has allowed some tribes to operate casinos to generate economic activity.
  4. Today, there are 826 Indigenous peoples in Latin America. Most of them are in Guatemala, Peru and Bolivia.
  5. The Maya were an Indigenous tribe that invented what we now know as chewing gum. They made it from the sap of the sapodilla tree.
  6. In the United States alone there are about 3.08 million people of Indian origin, including descendants of the natives of Alaska. This means they make up barely 1% of the United States population.
  7. Today there are more than 500 tribes in the United States, of which 100 live in Alaska. Another 100 tribes have not yet received official recognition.
  8. The Sioux were a great American tribe that lived in the prairies of the United States. They were nomads and experts at hunting bison.
  9. Native Americans were excluded from political affairs for a long time, until in 1924 they were recognized as United States citizens and given the right to vote.
  10. The Inca had within their army a group of women who were in charge of helping the people in case of natural disasters. They were known as La Chunga.
  11. The Mapuche were an Indigenous people originally from Chile, with a wide presence in Argentina. In Chile they were mostly farmers, and when they moved to Argentina they took up hunting and gathering.
  12. The Mapuche were polygamous, meaning the more money they had, the more wives they could have.
  13. The instruments used by Native Americans were wind instruments and percussion. In the United States and Canada the music was accompanied by monophonic percussion.
  14. It is estimated that more than half of the world's crop production comes from plants that were initially developed by the Indigenous peoples of America.
  15. The Apache were an Indigenous tribe that lived in the lands of Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and northwestern Mexico. Today, their population is estimated at around 57,000 people.
