Did you know that Africa is the third largest continent in the whole world? It's super big! It borders the Mediterranean Sea to the north, and to the south the Indian and Atlantic oceans.
It's said that the Romans were the first to make contact with the inhabitants of Africa. They called them "Afri" which derives from "afar" (Phoenician language) and means "dusty."

- Africa has a surface area of 30,370,000 km². It's no wonder it's the second largest continent on the planet, only after Asia!
- In Africa is the largest refugee camp in the world. It's located in Kenya, and it's the Dadaab refugee camp.
- Botswana is one of the main diamond producers in Africa. In fact, it ranks second on the world list, only after Russia.
- Africa is one of the continents with the highest birth rate in the whole world. On average, the African woman has 6 children in her lifetime. That's a lot!
- Equatorial Guinea is the richest country in Africa. However, two thirds of its population live in poverty.
- The cost of living in several African capitals is quite high, even though it's the continent with the most poverty of all.
- In Africa there are more than 350 national parks. There are so many! Kenya boasts 25 parks and South Africa has 22.
- The largest African country is Algeria in terms of its surface area (2,381,741 km²), even though most of it is desert. In terms of population, it barely ranks ninth.
- In Africa more than 1000 African languages are spoken. Other sources such as UNESCO claim there may be almost 2000. Amazing!
- In Africa is the longest river in the world. The Nile River! It's 6,650 km long, and in it lives the Nile Crocodile, which can grow up to about 4 meters long.
- Scientists consider that the first civilizations in the world were born in Africa. They arose along the Nile River, therefore they also come from Egypt.
- Islam arrived in Africa from the Mediterranean, in the 7th century, and currently more than 290 million Africans follow Islam.
- As of 2021, Burundi was the poorest country in Africa. With a GDP per capita of 267 dollars a year. How terrible! The second is South Sudan.
- 43% of African children do not attend school or receive a basic education. How terrible!
- In Libya is the hottest region on the whole planet. Its thermometers have reached 58°! These are without a doubt very extreme temperatures.
- The most widely spoken languages in Africa are Arabic and Swahili.
- The Namib Desert is the oldest desert in the world. Its formation dates back about 65 million years, and do you know where it's located? In Africa!
- The Danakil Desert is located in the Horn of Africa, and there's a depression in the crust 155 meters below sea level. In this place there's a lot of volcanic activity, and it has temperatures that reach 60 °C.
- 30% of natural mineral resources are found in Africa.
- Around 40% of adults in Africa are illiterate, and two thirds of them are women.
