Skating is a sport that consists of moving over a flat surface using roller skates or ice skates.

This can be an artistic sport, a street sport or an extreme sport.

  1. The fastest ice skating spin in history was achieved by the Canadian Olivia Oliver on January 19, 2015, in Poland. The speed recorded was 342 revolutions per minute. Incredible!
  2. Did you know that the longest ice skating trail in the world is Lake Windermere Whiteway? It is located in British Columbia, in Canada; and it measures an impressive 29.98 kilometers in length.
  3. With 200 kilometers in length, “Elfstedentocht” or “The Tour of the Eleven Cities” is the longest ice skating race in the world. In 1986 it was held in the Netherlands and it is estimated that 16,000 skaters took part.
  4. Did you know that the longest skating line in history had 321 skaters? It was achieved in Spain on April 23, 2016 by the Seville Skaters Club.
  5. The oldest professional inline skater is the American Donna Vano. She was born on June 3, 1953, and since 1991 she has been competing in skating and snowboarding tournaments. To date she has more than 30 years of experience.
  6. Did you know that on November 1, 2019 the Shivganga Roller Skating Club managed to break the world record for “the longest conga line on roller skates”? This had 308 skaters!
  7. Did you know that in 2002 Russell “Rusty” Moncrief managed to cross the United States of America on inline skates? With an estimated 61 kilometers a day, he managed to skate from Florida to California in 69 days, 8 hours and 45 minutes. Incredible!
  8. Did you know that ancient ice skates were made with ivory and bones of animals like deer or horses?
  9. World Skater Day is celebrated on April 14 each year.
  10. In August 2014 the American Steven Ruppel broke the record for the “fastest marathon on skates”. The 42 kilometers were completed in 2 hours, 17 minutes and 53 seconds.
