Simón Bolívar was a political and military leader who was born in Caracas, Venezuela, on July 24, 1783, into one of the wealthiest families in the country. Bolívar played a key role in the struggles for the independence of Latin America in the early 19th century.
Bolívar led some of the most important battles of the Latin American War of Independence, among them: the Battle of Carabobo (June 24, 1821), the Battle of Pichincha (May 24, 1822) and the Battle of Ayacucho (December 9, 1824).

- Simón Bolívar's real name is longer than you think. His full name was Simón José Antonio de la Santísima Trinidad Bolívar y Palacios. In those days, long names were common.
- Simón Bolívar came from a privileged family, but to achieve his dream of a free Latin America, he financed many independence movements against the Spanish, to the point that he died in poverty.
- At the age of 18, Simón Bolívar married María Teresa del Toro Alayza, whom he had been courting for two years before marrying her on May 26, 1802. Unfortunately, his wife died on July 22, 1803 after contracting yellow fever.
- After the death of his wife, Simón Bolívar fell into a deep depression and promised never to marry again at the age of 19. He kept this promise, despite having several lovers.
- Simón Bolívar was born on July 24, 1783 in Caracas, Venezuela. His parents were Colonel Juan Vicente Bolívar y Ponte and Concepción Palacios Blanco.
- In the year 1804, Bolívar swore in the House of the Liberator in Rome that he would not rest until he freed Latin America from Spanish rule. This oath is known as the "Oath of Monte Sacro."
- Simón Bolívar is considered the liberator of Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Bolivia.
- Due to his great contributions to the Independence of several Latin American countries, two of them bear the name of Simón Bolívar to honor him: the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and the nation of Bolivia.
- Simón Bolívar's white horse was named Palomo, and Bolívar considered him his most loyal friend. After the liberator's death, Palomo was taken to Colombia and given a burial with honors.
- Bolívar died of natural causes in Santa Marta, Colombia, on December 17, 1830, at the age of 47.
- Some of the most important battles that Simón Bolívar led in the fight for independence were the Battle of Boyacá in Colombia, the Battle of Pichincha in Ecuador and the Battle of Ayacucho in Peru.
- Simón Bolívar was known for being a strategic and determined leader, who made risky decisions that were worth it, and who also favored surprise attacks that led him to the capture of Bogotá in 1819.
- Simón Bolívar was orphaned at an early age; his father died when he was just 3 years old and his mother when he was 9 years old, leaving him then in the care of his maternal grandfather, Feliciano Palacios y Sojo.
- Simón Bolívar was also interested in education in Latin America. He promoted the founding of various libraries, museums and schools.
- Simón Bolívar's great dream was to unite the countries of Latin America. He achieved his goal partially when he united the countries of Ecuador, New Granada, Venezuela and the Republic of Colombia into a single country called Gran Colombia.
