Joan of Arc was a young peasant girl who earned the title of Heroine of France, thanks to her important role in the Hundred Years' War, a war that pitted the dauphin Charles against Henry VI of England for the throne of France.

Joan of Arc became an important figure when she confessed that God had entrusted her with a mission of great importance: to lead the French army and crown the dauphin as king in Reims, and also, to expel all the English who were against her. Without a doubt a great mission, worthy of an exceptional person!

  1. At the age of 13, Joan of Arc confessed to having seen three saints: Saint Michael, Saint Catherine and Saint Margaret.
  2. Joan of Arc was born in Domrémy, France, in 1412.
  3. Did you know that there is a town named in honor of Joan of Arc? After all her heroic deeds, her hometown, Domrémy, came to be called "Domrémy la Pucelle," where "Pucelle" means maiden or virgin in English.
  4. Joan of Arc called herself Jehanne La Pucelle, where "Pucelle" means maiden, which implied that the young woman was a virgin, something very important in the society of that time.
  5. Joan of Arc joined the French army in 1429 and quickly rose through the ranks.
  6. In 1429, Joan led the French army to victory at the Battle of Orléans. This victory was a turning point in the war and helped secure the French crown for King Charles VII.
  7. Joan of Arc suffered from visions, or at least that is what the heroine herself indicated, since according to her, she began to hear voices at age 13 in her family's garden, voices that led her to lead a pure life with a doctrine grounded in piety.
  8. During the trial to which Joan of Arc was subjected, she mentioned that the spirits she saw and heard had told her that she was the virgin who was destined to save France.
  9. Joan of Arc had a very brief military career. It began in April 1429, when she set off with several troops to relieve Orléans, until May 1430, when she was captured by the troops of John of Luxembourg.
  10. When Joan of Arc was defeated, they said this had been due to her supernatural powers, arguing that a follower of the devil, named Pucelle, used enchantments and sorcery.
  11. Joan was handed over to the English king Henry VI, and after a trial, she was condemned and burned at the stake in May 1431.
  12. Joan of Arc was burned to ashes, except for the bones that they threw into the Seine. It is said that they did this to prevent other individuals from worshiping her.
  13. Did you know that Joan of Arc has her own religion? It is a religious movement founded in Vietnam in 1926, known as Caodaism. It is a religion that turned figures like Joan of Arc, Buddha, Jesus Christ and Victor Hugo into saints.
  14. Some historians indicate that Joan of Arc never fought directly in a battle, but rather was in charge of combat strategies, directing the troops, and handling diplomatic conflicts.
  15. At the trial to which she was subjected, Joan was accused of cross-dressing. This is because, taking into account the dangers of a woman surrounded by soldiers, she decided to change her appearance by cutting her hair like the soldiers, and wearing men's clothes, all in order to carry out her mission.
  16. After Joan helped Charles VII be crowned King of France, she stopped hearing the inner voices and requested to return home; however, they insisted that she continue participating in other battles, which were unsuccessful.
  17. It is said that Joan of Arc adopted the custom of wearing several layers of clothing around her waist to deter sexual attacks that could end her virginity, something she considered important for her mission.
  18. When Joan of Arc was handed over to the English and tried by an ecclesiastical court, she was accused of witchcraft, with the argument that the voices she heard came from the devil.
  19. Joan of Arc was considered a martyr and turned into a symbol of French unity.
  20. Joan of Arc was beatified in 1909, and later canonized in 1920, the same year in which France proclaimed her its patron saint.
