Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy, in 1451. He was an Italian navigator and explorer who played a very important role in the discovery of the New World and its colonization by Europeans in the 15th century.

It took Columbus several years to secure funding for his voyages, but he finally managed to convince Queen Isabella with the promise of finding a new route to India. That is why when Columbus reached the New World, he called the natives "Indians," thinking he had arrived in India.

  1. Christopher Columbus's real name was Cristoforo Colombo in Italian.
  2. Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy. His exact date of birth is not known, but it is believed to be between August 25 and October 31, 1451.
  3. Christopher Columbus began his career as a sailor at the early age of 14.
  4. Almost half of Christopher Columbus's voyages ended in disaster. In 1492, the ship Santa María ran aground and sank on his famous voyage to the Indies, and in May 1502, his ship rotted underneath and he had to spend a year stranded with his crew in Jamaica.
  5. It took Christopher Columbus a great deal of effort to get Queen Isabella to fund his voyage. In fact, 6 years had to pass before the queen was convinced.
  6. In Christopher Columbus's time it was already known that the Earth was round. The hard part was not convincing the crew that they would not fall off an edge, but rather calculating the distance correctly: many thought Asia was too far away to reach by sailing west.
  7. Christopher Columbus's ships were called the Pinta, the Niña and the Santa María. His first voyage with Columbus began on August 3, 1492, and on October 12 they reached San Salvador Island, 375 miles off the coast of Florida.
  8. On his first voyage with the ships the Santa María, the Pinta and the Niña, only two ships returned to Spain, since one night a lookout fell asleep and the Santa María became trapped on a sandbank and the coral reefs destroyed the hull.
  9. Although Christopher Columbus made several voyages to the New World, he never visited the territory now occupied by the United States.
  10. Christopher Columbus died on May 20, 1506, in Valladolid, Spain, at the age of 54.
  11. Christopher Columbus did not believe he had found new lands. At first, he was convinced he had arrived somewhere near Asia.
  12. Christopher Columbus was governor of Santo Domingo for several years, but he was greedy, kept most of the profits and gave inhumane treatment to the indigenous people. He was arrested and sent back to Spain before another governor was appointed.
  13. Christopher Columbus was unable to claim all the rewards for his voyages and discoveries, but his relatives filed a lawsuit against the royal crown after his death. Twenty years later, Columbus's heirs received properties and riches.
  14. It is speculated that Christopher Columbus was very religious and believed he had been chosen by God to find the New World. It is said that in his final years he wore a Franciscan habit.
  15. It is believed that Christopher Columbus had two brothers: Bartolomé and Diego.
