- There are more than 5,500 species of earthworms. There sure is a great variety! That's without counting the species that may still be undiscovered.
- Earthworms belong to the same family as leeches and worms, they belong to the annelids.
- Earthworms don't have eyes, nor a nose, nor ears. None of that! Instead, they have sensors that help them tell light from darkness.
- Did you know that ultraviolet light can kill earthworms? Poor things! No wonder they live underground.
- Earthworms don't have lungs. Are you wondering how they breathe? They do it through their skin. Since they are animals that live off moisture, through their moist skin they exchange gases that allow them to survive.
- There are no male or female earthworms! Actually, they are hermaphrodites, meaning they have both reproductive organs. However, even so, two earthworms are needed to be able to reproduce. Crazy, isn't it?
- African earthworms can measure up to 6 meters. However, in general these measure 2 meters.
- In the world there are thousands of species of earthworms, more than 5,500 described! And scientists believe that there are still many left to discover.
- Earthworms are very strong! They can regenerate missing parts, so if you cut them in half, they'll still survive. But don't do it if you see one!
- Earthworms are important for maintaining the health of the soil, meaning the activities they carry out, of digging, digesting, especially the latter, help aerate and fertilize the soil.
- Earthworms can consume half of their body weight. Sometimes even more! They eat garbage, small rocks, and dead organic matter.
- Earthworms don't have one heart, nor two nor three. They have five hearts! To be more specific, they have five aortic arches that work as hearts. And besides that they have 6 pairs of kidneys.
- Earthworm excrement, also known as worm humus, is very important in agriculture, since it supplies the soil with the nutrients needed to promote the growth of plants. Also, it fights diseases they may have.
- Earthworms can be used as bioindicators of soil health, since they are sensitive to changes in the environment.
