Why color dragonflies pictures?

At some point you've probably seen dragonflies fly, since they are very common insects in nature. However, we're sure you don't know many things about them. Come on! At Coloring Together we'll explain many interesting things we learned along the way.

Dragonflies are flying insects that live in lakes, rivers, and marshy regions, and they are recognizable thanks to the pair of double transparent wings they have. Dragonflies are skilled predators, capable of generating hunting strategies whose success rate is more than 90%.

They are able to use camouflage to look like a motionless object and hunt. They feed mostly on mosquitoes, flies, butterflies and moths. Wow! They are truly fearsome creatures. We would love to tell you more, but we're out of lines.

Learn while coloring Dragonflies

  1. Dragonflies are insects that can intercept prey in midair. They are very fast and calculating! They are so skilled that they have a success rate of up to 95%.
  2. Dragonflies have very sharp jaws, which allows them to tear their prey apart, even while in midflight. When they capture their prey, they rip off its wings so it can't escape.
  3. Dragonflies are known for being tough. A species called Pantala flavescens flies across the ocean during migration seasons, and they have recorded up to 17,700 kilometers. This one earned the title of the longest insect migration in the world.
  4. Dragonflies are excellent fliers. They can fly forward, backward, up, down, and they can even stop in midair and change direction.
  5. In 2009, the United Kingdom got its first dragonfly sanctuary, a space to protect these insects against the dangers caused by humans.
  6. Damselflies are not the same as dragonflies. The main difference is that the body of damselflies is a bit more elongated compared to dragonflies.
  7. Dragonflies are found within the Odonata, which makes them cousins of damselflies.
  8. Some dragonfly species can reach speeds of up to 29 kilometers per hour. Incredible!
  9. Dragonflies have very good vision, in fact, with their large eyes they can see almost 360°. Their only blind spot is the part behind them.
  10. Dragonflies lay their eggs in the water, and the aquatic larvae spend almost their entire life underwater before emerging as adult dragonflies.
  11. Dragonflies can live up to 2 years underwater. Incredible! In fact, some species can stay in the larval stage for up to six years.
  12. Thanks to their excellent vision, 80% of a dragonfly's brain is dedicated to analyzing the visual information of its surroundings.
  13. Some dragonfly species, like the seaside dragonlet, lay their eggs in the sea. This is something very few insects do because it's difficult to survive in salt water. Incredible!
  14. For the samurai, dragonflies were important, because they symbolized power, agility, and victory. They were so relevant that on some samurai armor you can see engravings of dragonflies. Incredible!
  15. A dragonfly's head is made up, for the most part, of its two enormous eyes that contain up to 30,000 facets, each one provides information about its surroundings.
  16. Dragonflies are important insects because they help control populations of pest insects, like mosquitoes and flies.
  17. The diet of dragonflies does not include humans or horses, so they don't sting. These insects feed on other types of insects, including termites and ants.
  18. Dragonfly nymphs (that is, similar to adult dragonflies, but lacking maturity in the sexual organs), have their gills at the end of the abdomen.
  19. Dragonflies already existed before the dinosaurs! The precursors of this insect date back about 300 million years, to the Carboniferous. Unlike present-day dragonflies, they could measure more than 720 mm. They were bigger!
  20. Dragonflies don't usually do courtship. These insects are able to mate in midflight. This act can last from several seconds to a couple of minutes.
  21. The body plan of dragonflies is divided into three parts: head, thorax, and abdomen.
  22. Dragonfly nymphs usually expel a certain amount of water through their anus, which helps them move nimbly through the water and escape from possible predators.
  23. The presence of dragonflies in rivers or areas with water is an indicator of the good health of the environment, since they are sensitive to changes in pH or in the water temperature.
  24. In pre-Hispanic Mexico, dragonflies played an important role in their culture, since they were considered a symbol of the purity of water.
  25. The Mexica believed that dragonflies were evil beings. Astonishing!
