It is impossible that you have not seen some pirate, on television or in fantasy tales. But they are real! Pirates are individuals who commit acts of crime on the high seas.
They steal, and assault other vessels for personal gain. Another definition of pirate is that of individuals who explore the seas and venture into them for prolonged times, hiding from the authorities.

Learn while coloring Pirates
- Do you know where the word "pirate" comes from? It comes from the Greek "peirates" which means "to assault". Incredible!
- Bartholomew Roberts, also known as Black Bart, was a pirate who had certain rules on his ship. Fights were forbidden, as was bringing children or women aboard, and gambling for money.
- Some theories indicate that pirates wore earrings, because they served to finance their burials. Another theory suggests that they were protective amulets.
- It is believed that piracy began in ancient Egypt, when Ramesses III ruled, between 1184 and 1153 BC.
- Black Bart was one of the most successful pirates in history, with almost 400 raids. Amazing!
- Pirates were definitely greatly feared, but among them there were unbreakable rules and codes. A pirate could not kill another unless they broke the code. If this happened, the pirate received a blank sheet with a drop of black ink in the center, indicating that they would be killed.
- Julius Caesar was kidnapped by pirates! It happened when he was young, long before coming to power in Rome. They demanded 20 talents of silver for the ransom, and Caesar urged them to ask for 50. When they let him go free, he swore to capture each one of those responsible, something he fulfilled shortly after.
- If you were on the high seas and saw a ship with a red flag, the best thing was to flee as fast as possible. Do you know what this bloody flag meant? That the crew was heavily armed and willing to annihilate anyone who bothered them.
- The ones who got the least of the pirates' loot were the sailors. The captain was entitled to six times the share of each one. Working as a pirate without being captain was definitely not very convenient.
- The most popular execution among pirates was to tie their prisoners by the arms and tie a huge stone to their legs, and then throw them into the sea. In reality, it was rare for them to make their victims walk the plank.
- In the year 1700 sugar was much more valuable than gold, so pirates were always in search of those loots. Another thing that was essential were maps. They were so rare that they were always kept in chests.
- Pirates based their weather forecasts on superstitions. If, for example, they saw a black cat, the day would be dry and sunny. If they put the cat out, there would be wind and rain. Poor kitty!
- In reality, pirates were not one-eyed, but they did wear a patch over one eye. The reason was so they would have one eye adapted to the dark, so that if they were attacked, they could defend their ship on a lit deck and in the dark interiors.
- There was a pirate who had a calling as a writer. This pirate was named Alexandre Olivier Exquemelin, who wrote "The Buccaneers of America". Who would have thought? Criminal and learned.
- The pirates' favorite dish was "salmagundi". It was marinated or cooked meat, which was seasoned with garlic, pepper, salt, vinegar and oil. They added vegetables, eggs, anchovies or grapes.

- The pirate William Kidd buried his treasure off the coast of Long Island. But not all pirates did the same! There is no evidence that they buried them on deserted islands.
- There were women pirates! Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two women who dedicated themselves to assaulting small vessels, and who dressed as men to hide their identity.
- Blackbeard was one of the most bloodthirsty pirates of all. He dressed in black and had hemp fuses woven into his beard. He would burn them and make the smoke give him a diabolical appearance. How scary!
- According to some Greek translations, Ulysses committed acts of piracy on his return to Ithaca.
- Which pirate flag comes to mind most? Is it the one of a skull with two crossed bones? That was the flag of Jolly Roger, and it was no more than one of the many variations that pirates used.
