- The first refracting telescope in history was invented by the German optician Hans Lippershey in the early 17th century. It was rudimentary and consisted of a pair of overlapping lenses that let you enlarge distant images up to three times their real size.
- It is said that the term “telescope” was coined for the first time by Giovanni Demisiani, who was referring to the novel instrument presented by Galileo Galilei.
- The word “telescope” means “to see far away”. It comes from the Greek “teles-“ (which means far) and “-skopeó“ (which means to see or observe).
- The largest single optical telescope in the world is the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). It is located on the island of La Palma, has a diameter of 10.4 meters and a dome of 35 meters. Building it required 130 million euros and 7 years of work!
- Did you know that the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is the most expensive telescope in the world? It was launched on April 25, 1990, and had a manufacturing cost of 2.1 billion U.S. dollars. Impressive!
