The sense of sight is the ability to perceive light and colors, as well as the shapes, distances and movements of the objects around us. The sense of sight allows us to orient ourselves in space, recognize people and things, appreciate beauty and art, and communicate with gestures and facial expressions.

It is based on the functioning of the eye, which is the organ in charge of capturing light stimuli and converting them into nerve impulses that travel to the brain. Did you know? 1. The sense of sight is the most developed of the five human senses. 80% of the information we receive from the outside world is through our eyes.
  2. The eyes are like a 576 megapixel camera, capable of capturing up to 10 million different colors.
  3. Believe it or not, the eyes grow throughout life, especially in the first years and during puberty.
  4. The eyes have two types of cells: rods and cones. The rods, which are approximately 125 million, are responsible for detecting shapes, while the cones, which are around 7 million, are responsible for distinguishing colors.
  5. The eyes blink about 17 times per minute, which adds up to about 14,000 times a day and 5.2 million a year. Blinking serves to protect, lubricate and clean the eyes.
  6. Blue eyes are the result of a genetic mutation that occurred between 6,000 and 10,000 years ago in a single individual, according to a study conducted by the University of Copenhagen.
  7. Green eyes are the rarest in the world, only 2% of the world's population has them. It is believed they originated from the mix of genes of people with blue and brown eyes.
  8. Black eyes do not exist as such, they are actually very dark brown eyes that reflect little light. The color black is the absence of color.
  9. The eyes can have two different colors, which is called heterochromia. This condition can be hereditary, caused by an injury or an illness, or simply random.
  10. Color blindness is a disorder that prevents distinguishing some colors, especially red and green. It affects men more than women and is due to an alteration in the genes of the cones.
  11. Achromatopsia is an extreme case of color blindness that involves the inability to see any color at all, beyond black and white. It is a very rare disease that affects one in every 30,000 people in the world. How terrible!
  12. Sight adapts to darkness in about 20 minutes, but it only needs a second to adapt to light. This is because the rods are more sensitive to light than the cones and take longer to regenerate.
  13. Sight is the sense that most influences the body's balance. If we lose our vision, we get dizzy and lose our spatial orientation. This is because the brain receives contradictory information from the eyes and the inner ear.
  14. Sight is the sense that deteriorates most with age. From the age of 40, many people start to have trouble focusing on nearby objects, which is called presbyopia or tired eyes.
  15. Sight can improve with training. Some activities like reading, doing crosswords, playing chess or solving puzzles stimulate visual acuity and prevent cognitive decline.
