Chemistry is an indispensable science in our day to day. And if you look closely, you will notice that we use countless chemical principles in everyday activities as simple as making a little ice, burning a piece of paper or boiling an egg.

Almost all the food, cleaning and personal hygiene products we have at home are made under the supervision of a qualified group of chemists. They ensure that the compounds of these products maintain certain proportions and quality, and are not harmful to human beings.

Can you imagine if they changed the formula of your favorite shampoo? Or if the yogurt you have for breakfast were no longer so creamy and sweet? Wow, chemistry really is important! And that is why at Coloring Together we have put together such a beautiful gallery.

  1. Had you noticed that the only letter that does not appear in the periodic table is the letter J? None of the 118 elements has it as its chemical symbol or includes it in its name.
  2. Did you know that in the body of an adult person there are between 11 and 14.8 kilograms of carbon? For this calculation we took into account that the human body is made up of 18.5% carbon and that an average adult weighs between 60 and 80 kilograms.
  3. Did you know that in the body of an average adult there are between 45 and 60 liters of water? For this calculation we considered that the human body is made up of 75% water and that the weight of an average adult is between 60 and 80 kilograms.
  4. The gastric juices in your stomach are much more acidic than the juice of a lemon. The lower the pH of a substance, the more acidic it will be; and the pH of your gastric juices is approximately 1.5 and that of lemon juice is approximately 2.3.
  5. Did you know that white vinegar is a very powerful solvent? It is capable of dissolving bones, pearls and even teeth if they are soaked for a few hours. Remember to brush your teeth very well after consuming it!
  6. Fruits ripen and rot thanks to the ethylene they produce. This is a substance made up of carbon and hydrogen that takes part in their growth cycle, and gives them a pleasant smell, taste and texture when they are ready to be eaten.
  7. Have you wondered why we cry when we cut an onion? Onions contain sulfur inside them. When you cut them, this is released in the form of gases that cause irritation and tears when they come into contact with our eyes.
  8. Have you noticed that soap comes off better and faster with hot water? This is because soaps contain various types of salts whose solubility is proportional to the temperature of the water.
  9. The meats we eat are red due to their high content of myoglobin. Myoglobin is a muscle hemoprotein in charge of storing and transporting oxygen. Human beings have it too!
  10. Did you know that the very sweet taste of fruits is because they contain fructose? This monosaccharide is the sweetest carbohydrate of all; and when joined with glucose, it gives rise to sucrose or common white sugar.
  11. Have you wondered where the delicious vanilla taste in your favorite desserts comes from? Most comes from the essence of an orchid; and a small part comes from castoreum, a secretion obtained from the anus of beavers.
  12. The most abundant element in the known Universe is hydrogen. It is followed in order by helium, oxygen, carbon, neon and iron.
  13. The most abundant element in the crust of planet Earth is oxygen. It is followed in order by silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium.
  14. The rarest natural elements on planet Earth are the "rare metals." These are rhenium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium, tellurium, osmium, gold, platinum and palladium.
  15. An element can be natural or synthetic. Natural elements are found free in nature and synthetic ones can only be created artificially by man. Some synthetic elements are rutherfordium, mendelevium and nobelium.
