Christmas is an important date for Christians, since it commemorates the birth of Jesus. Families at Christmas tend to spend it together so that joy reigns throughout the whole month of December, and it is not limited only to the religious meaning.

On this date it is about children being able to enjoy a magical moment, where the family gathers to celebrate their traditions, delicious dishes are made and gifts are opened on Christmas night.

But, not all families celebrate Christmas the same way, there are many customs around the world that are quite beautiful and interesting and could surprise you.

1. In Norway, families at Christmas hide the brooms and the mops. Can you imagine why? Because they have the belief that on Christmas Night the evil spirits visit homes and try to steal the brooms to fly across the Christmas sky.
2. In Ukraine, families at Christmas decorate their Christmas tree with spider webs. Do not be scared, they are just decorations that look like spider webs, and they are believed to bring good luck.
3. In some countries, families at Christmas hide an ornament shaped like a pickle in the tree, and the person who finds it gets an extra gift or simply gets very good luck. It is not clear in which country this tradition of the pickle in the Christmas tree began.
4. In Ukraine and Poland, families at Christmas decide when it is time to open the gifts with the guidance of the stars; the youngest child has to look at the sky at night and wait for the first star to appear, that will be the signal to start opening the gifts.
5. In Slovakia, families at Christmas think that pudding can predict the future. The oldest male member of the family takes a spoonful and throws it at the ceiling. The amount of pudding that sticks indicates the amount of luck there will be in the year.
6. In Sweden, families at Christmas have the important tradition of planning so that at 3 in the afternoon on Christmas Eve, all the family members are gathered to watch the Donald Duck Christmas special.
7. In Catalonia, families at Christmas place a log with a painted face on it and wrap it in a blanket so it does not get cold. They fill it each day with treats, until on Christmas night the children hit it with sticks to get all the candy out.
8. In some countries, families at Christmas practice the tradition called "Elf on the Shelf", which consists of the Christmas elves getting up to mischief during the night, from the first of December until Christmas. The children wake up each morning to look for what the mischief was.
9. In Iceland, families at Christmas are used to having children leave their best shoes on the windowsill 13 days before Christmas, so the young Yule Lads leave them gifts.
10. In Colombia, every December 7, families at Christmas are used to placing candles or lanterns in the windows or balconies of their homes in honor of the Virgin Mary. In some towns they even compete to see who creates the best decoration.
11. In Australia, families at Christmas prefer to celebrate by having barbecues on the beach.
12. In Latvia, families at Christmas have a Christmas dinner, then each member looks for their gift under the tree, but it can only be opened after reciting a poem for each gift you have.
