- Did you know that there is a belief that candy canes have their origin in the city of Cologne, Germany?
- Candy canes began to appear from 1670.
- One theory says that at first candy canes were sugar sticks given to babies to calm them down. They became related to Christmas when a choir director began giving them to the youngest children to calm them before the Christmas performances.
- Candy canes have that shape so that they resemble the staffs of the shepherds of Bethlehem.
- Candy canes arrived in the United States in 1897, but it was not until 1920 that they became popular as Christmas sweets, thanks to candy maker Bob McCormack.
- Until 1950 candy canes were made by hand, it was Gregory Keller who invented the machine to make the work easier.
- At first, candy canes were simple white sugar sticks, but around the year 1900 candy makers added mint and the classic red stripes. More than a century passed before it expanded to the enormous variety of flavors that we can find today.
- In the Christian belief it is said that the white color of candy canes represents the purity of the Virgin Mary, and the red symbolizes the blood and sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
