- Did you know that palm trees belong to the Arecaceae family and the Arecales order? They are a group made up of more than 2,400 different species.
- Coconuts come from the tropical palm Cocos nucifera, commonly known as the coconut palm.
- Dates are very sweet and nutritious fruits obtained from palms of the genus Phoenix; especially from palms of the species Phoenix dactylifera, better known as date palms.
- Palms of the species Areca catechu produce a fruit called areca nut or betel nut. It is the fourth most consumed psychoactive substance in the world and is the main cause of oral cancer in many Asian countries.
- Palms of the species Euterpe oleracea (better known as acai palms or manaca palms) are known for their delicious and nutritious deep purple fruits. These are known as “acai” and are used to make drinks and desserts.
- The largest seeds in the world belong to the palm species Lodoicea maldivica, better known as the Coco de Mer. These can measure up to 50 centimeters in diameter and weigh up to 30 kilograms!
- Palm branches were considered sacred in some ancient civilizations. In Egypt and Mesopotamia they represented immortality, and in Rome they were given to the champions of the games and to war heroes because they represented victory, peace, and eternal life.
- Did you know that there are palm trees that can grow up to 61 meters tall? These are the palms of the species Ceroxylon quindiuense, better known as Quindio wax palms. They are endemic to Colombia and are in danger of extinction.
- Did you know that some palm species can live more than a century? The Canary Island palm (Phoenix canariensis), the Quindio wax palm (Ceroxylon quindiuense), and the oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) are a few examples.
- Did you know that the most consumed vegetable oil in the world is palm oil? It is extracted from the fruits of palms of the species Elaeis guineensis and is used for cooking and in food, cosmetic, cleaning, and personal care products.
