They are made up of a resonance box and a head or membrane that must be struck with sticks or with the hands so that its pleasant sound can be heard.

Drums can have a cylindrical, conical, barrel, goblet, bowl or hourglass shape. Some of the most popular types of drums that exist are the bass drums, the snare drums, the bongos, the congas, the taikos, the djembes and the timpani.

Learn while coloring Drums

  1. Did you know that drums are also called toms, tom-toms or tomtoms? Awesome!
  2. There are drums whose main purpose is to provide musical accompaniment to various religious, social, healing, protective and/or festive rituals. Some examples are the ashiko, the djembe, the beduk and the shaman drum.
  3. The bongo is one of the most popular types of drum that exist. It is originally from Cuba and gained worldwide fame at the beginning of the 20th century. It consists of two wooden bodies of different sizes, with hollow bottoms and leather membranes joined by a wooden strip.
  4. The timpani, kettledrum or timpano is a type of drum with a deep sound made up of a hemispherical metal box and a membrane fixed by a hoop and tension rods. It must be played with mallets or sticks and is characterized by its dry and resonant sound.
  5. The derbake or darbuka is a type of goblet-shaped drum of Arab origin. It is made with ceramic or clay and a very thin goatskin head. To play it, the palms of the hands and the fingers are used.
  6. The buk is a traditional Korean drum. It has a shallow barrel shape and is covered on both ends with animal skin. It is an essential piece of Korean folk music and Korean court music. Awesome!
  7. The snare drum is one of the most popular types of drum that exist. Also known as the side drum or field drum, it is played with wooden sticks and is characterized by its metallic sound and its thin build.
  8. The bass drum is a type of drum with a very deep and powerful tone that is usually used to mark and keep the beat in various types of melodies. There are different types of bass drums, such as the marching bass drum, the concert bass drum and the drum kit bass drum.
  9. The largest drum in the world is a traditional Korean drum called "CheonGo". It measures 5.54 meters in diameter, 5.96 meters tall and weighs 7 tons. It was created in 2011 by the local government of Yeong Dong-Gun and Seuk Je Lee, in South Korea.
  10. Did you know that the longest group drumroll in history lasted 64 hours, 27 minutes and 59 seconds? This impressive feat was achieved in May 2014 by the "Corps of Drums of Her Majesty's Royal Marines Band Service" in England.
