In Greek mythology, Artemis was the goddess of the hunt, chastity, nature and wildlife. She is the daughter of Zeus and Leto, and was considered the protector of young women and of childbirth.

She was usually worshiped at the Temple of Artemis, in Ephesus, a structure considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. She is generally depicted with a silver bow, made by the Cyclopes.

  1. Artemis was a goddess venerated in various parts of Ancient Greece, especially in Munichia, Sparta and Brauron. However, she was venerated in several places in Asia Minor, like Ephesus.
  2. In Ephesus (present-day Turkey) there is a Temple of Artemis, considered one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, built around the year 550 BC. However, this temple was destroyed two centuries later in a fire.
  3. Artemis was the twin sister of Apollo, the god of the sun and music.
  4. Artemis was a virgin goddess, therefore she was considered the protector of women during their menstrual period and of childbirth.
  5. When Hera found out that Leto's pregnancy (mother of Apollo and Artemis) was the product of an infidelity with her husband Zeus, she forbade her to give birth on land. Poseidon, on the other hand, helped her give birth sheltered from Hera's wrath, and so the two twins were born.
  6. It is said that Artemis was born before Apollo, so she was quickly entrusted to help her mother in the birth of Apollo, that is, she acted as a midwife right after being born.
  7. In Roman mythology, Artemis was known as Diana, and was considered the goddess of the hunt, the moon and the forests.
  8. It is told that a young hunter saw Artemis naked by accident, while she was taking a bath. The goddess, angry with him because he had defiled her chastity with his gaze, turned him into a deer and ordered her dogs to hunt him. In the end, this young man ended up devoured by the dogs.
  9. Artemis was a capricious and untamable goddess. She killed anyone who offended her purity or who tried to court her.
  10. Artemis had a very close relationship with her brother. It is said that she always defended his honor, to the point of killing those who dared to reject him.
