When Hera found out that Leto's pregnancy (Leto was the mother of Apollo and Artemis) was the result of an affair with her husband Zeus, she forbade Leto from giving birth on land. Poseidon, on the other hand, helped her give birth safe from Hera's anger, and so the twins were born.
