The Spanish flag has a long and interesting history, and like all flags, it went through important changes over the years, until it became just as we know it today.
The Spanish flag first appeared in the 18th century, when Charles III ordered it designed to tell it apart from other flags carried by the ships of the Bourbon dynasty. Since they were white, they could easily be confused. What a problem!
Antonio Valdés y Fernández Bazán were in charge of creating a new flag for naval use. That was the beginning of the Spanish flag. But wait! We still have much more to tell you.

- The design of the flag of Spain was chosen by Charles III in the year 1785, with the goal of telling Spanish ships apart from enemy vessels. Incredible!
- In 1843, Isabella II required the flag to adopt the colors red and yellow, so that it would reflect the unity of the Spanish monarchy, the army and the rest of the State's institutions.
- During the Second Republic in Spain, a royal decree was published establishing that the Spanish flag would have three colors: red, yellow and purple, with the coat of arms of Spain.
- The flag of Spain was born to solve a naval problem, since the Bourbon dynasty that ruled Spain, Naples, Parma, France and Sicily had several ships with very similar white flags. That is why Charles III ordered a new Spanish flag to be created to tell it apart.
- In the 18th century, when Charles III ordered Antonio Valdés to create a new flag, a contest was organized to decide which one would win. From that contest came 12 sketches, of which the King chose two. Amazing!
- During the Civil War, the flag's original colors were brought back (they had been changed in the Second Republic) and the eagle of Saint John was added, representing the union of the Catholic Monarchs.
- In the First Spanish Republic, which was set up in 1873, the colors of the flag were not altered. However, all the royal symbols of the monarchy were removed from the coats of arms.
- The flag of Spain is also known as the “rojigualda” because of its colors, the red and the “gualdo,” which is actually the color yellow. Amazing!
