Celebrating the New Year is one of the most widespread customs there is. Families and groups of friends from almost every country in the world gather between the night of December 31 and the early morning of January 1 to welcome the new year.

It is customary to have dinner, make a toast and perform various kinds of rituals to attract blessings and good luck for the new year ahead. Can you identify which New Year traditions your family has?

  1. Did you know that the Republic of Kiribati is the first country in the world to welcome the New Year? It is followed by New Zealand, Fiji, Tonga, Russia and Australia.
  2. Do you know what all the territories that welcome the New Year latest have in common? Well, they are all located in the Pacific Ocean! Such is the case of Hawaii, American Samoa, French Polynesia and the Revillagigedo, Pitcairn, Baker and Howland islands.
  3. Two of the territories that make up overseas France welcome the New Year almost a full day apart. This is the curious case of French Polynesia and the Wallis and Futuna islands, whose time difference is about 24 hours.
  4. Did you know that the Chinese do not celebrate the New Year on the first of January every year? The celebration of the “Spring Festival” or the “Chinese New Year” begins on the first day of the lunar year and ends 15 days later. This happens between the months of January and February.
  5. About a third of the world population celebrates Chinese New Year. That is equal to 2.6 billion people who belong to countries like China, Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, South Korea, Malaysia, North Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Incredible!
  6. Did you know that each Chinese New Year is represented by one of the animals of the Chinese zodiac? These are the pig, the rat, the ox, the tiger, the rabbit, the dragon, the snake, the horse, the goat, the monkey, the rooster and the dog.
  7. In India the New Year celebration is called “Diwali” or the “Festival of Lights”. It lasts five days and is celebrated in Kartika, the month of the Hindu calendar that begins on October 23 and ends on November 21.
  8. Each year around 1 million people gather in Times Square to welcome the New Year. Times Square is a famous intersection of avenues in Manhattan, New York. Awesome!
  9. The “Loony Dook” is a Scottish tradition in which people welcome the New Year by plunging into the icy waters of the “Firth of Forth" river north of Edinburgh. Would you like to celebrate the new year this way?
  10. Did you know that in some parts of the world it is a tradition to go out into the street carrying suitcases during the New Year celebration because it is said this attracts travel, abundance and good fortune? What new year traditions are there in your country?
  11. One of the most popular new year traditions among cultures all over the world is making a New Year resolution to help break bad habits or reach short-term goals. That is why gyms tend to be more crowded during the first months of the year!
  12. The first New Year celebration on January 1 happened in the year 45 BC. That was when the Roman dictator Julius Caesar introduced the Julian calendar.
