Carnival is a celebration with Christian origins. Did you know? It takes place before the Christian Lent. Isn't that surprising? Who would have thought! After all, carnival is a celebration we rarely associate with religion.

This celebration is different in each country, although many features stay the same, like the use of costumes, masks, dances and music. And in your country, how do you celebrate carnival?

  1. Do you know the meaning of "Carnival"? It means "to give up meat". How crazy! Because, generally, we don't associate carnival with religion.
  2. The Portuguese brought the carnival tradition to Brazil in 1641, through the Entrudo, a popular festival in which people threw flour, water and eggs at each other.
  3. The first Carnival ball in Brazil was organized by an Italian actress in 1840. That is when the tradition of masks and costumes began! Her idea was to popularize the traditions of the Venice Carnival.
  4. The costumes at the Cadiz carnival are more than they appear. In reality, the costumes contribute to leveling social classes, so that everyone could dress however they wanted and criticize whoever they wanted.
  5. The Venice Carnival is one of the oldest in the world. Did you know? It dates back to 1094, created by Vitale Falier, a member of a very important family in the city. How amazing!
  6. In 1296 the Venetian Senate formalized Carnival as the last day before Lent.
  7. The Carnival of Santa Cruz de Tenerife is celebrated in the Canary Islands, and it is one of the most popular in the world. It begins with the election of the carnival queen and ends with the burial of the sardine on Ash Wednesday.
  8. Carnival in Belgium begins three days before Lent. In this celebration, characters called "Gilles" come out into the streets, dressed in traditional clothes and throwing red oranges into the crowd.
  9. Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is very lively, because it not only opens with the crowning of the carnival king, but also several samba schools compete with each other to enter a Special Group. A carnival full of dancing!
  10. By the 1960s carnival in Brazil was already very popular. But, two decades later, the "Rio Sambadrome" was built, which remains an international tourist attraction to this day.
