Since its launch in 1983, Mario Bros has spawned amazing spin-off sagas of worldwide success, such as Super Mario Bros. and New Super Mario Bros. Together, the three are among the most popular sagas of the Mario franchise, of the company Nintendo and of video game history.

Mario holds two world records: the video game franchise with the most copies sold in all of history and the most popular video game mascot of all time. Beyond its undeniable commercial appeal, the Mario Bros saga has excellent stories, soundtracks, character design and gameplay, don't you think?

Learn while coloring Mario Bros

  1. "Mario Bros" or "Mario Brothers" is an arcade video game developed in 1983 by the Japanese entertainment company Nintendo.
  2. The Mario Bros video game was released for arcade on July 14, 1983 in Japan and July 20, 1983 in the United States. By the end of that same year, versions were released for NES, Atari 2600 and Atari 5200.
  3. The NES console version of Mario Bros was released at the end of 1983 in Japan. This version reached the United States years later, in 1986.
  4. The Mario Bros version for the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 consoles were released in the United States in December 1983.
  5. Both the Mario character and the Mario Bros video game were created by the Japanese video game designer and producer Shigeru Miyamoto.
  6. Mario's first appearance was in the 1981 video game Donkey Kong. In it, the character was not called Mario but Jumpman, he was a carpenter and had to dodge barrels thrown by the gorilla Donkey Kong to rescue Pauline, a kidnapped damsel.
  7. With more than 800 million units, the Mario franchise holds the world record for the most video game copies sold. And that is counting only the original copies!
  8. Due to the warm reception that Mario Bros received, Nintendo decided to release on September 13, 1985 a new video game inspired by the Mario brothers: Super Mario Bros.
  9. Mario's design is due to the limitations that video game consoles had in the 80s: the big nose and the mustache helped outline the profile of his face and the cap meant they did not have to animate his hair.
  10. March 10 of each year is International Mario Day. Why that day, you might wonder? Well, if you write the date abbreviating the month and placing it before the day, you end up getting Mar 10, which with a little imagination, reads MAR10.
  11. In the 1983 Mario Bros video game you could play as Mario or his younger brother in the green outfit, Luigi.
  12. The first appearance of the characters Princess Peach, Bowser and Toad was in the 1985 video game Super Mario Bros.
  13. The enemies in the 1983 Mario Bros were pests that came out of the pipes. Mario and Luigi had to dodge them and eliminate them all, and among them, there were turtles, crabs, flies and fireballs.
  14. It is said that Mario's name is a tribute to Mario Segale, the owner of Nintendo's offices and warehouses in the United States in the 80s.
  15. As Mario video games kept coming out, new characters appeared. Since 1983 enemies have been added such as Bowser, the boos, the koopas, the goombas, the bob-ombs, the piranha plants, Wario and Birdo.
  16. Since 1980, the Mario franchise has had more than 160 games in total. Among the most popular are those of the Super Mario Bros, Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, Mario Party and Mario and Sonic sagas.
  17. In the Super Mario Bros. video game saga, Mario is considered "super" when he eats one of the mushrooms that make him grow and able to break the bricks with his fists.
  18. Luigi is Mario's younger brother. His name comes from the Japanese "Ruiji", which means "similar", and the thing is, Luigi is very much like Mario, don't you think?
  19. There is a live action movie called Super Mario Bros. that was released in 1993 and featured actors Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper. Unfortunately, the film was a huge box office flop and got very bad reviews.
  20. In 2023 the animated movie The Super Mario Bros. Movie was released, by the animation studio Illumination, with famous voice actors such as Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day and Jack Black.
