The submarine is a ship or vessel that can not only navigate at the bottom of the ocean, but also on the surface. It's built in such a way that navigation is possible both outside and inside the sea.

There are several types of submarines, did you know? They range from exploration submarines to nuclear ones. The latter can last a long time under the sea. Amazing!

There are also submarines meant for civilians; they tend to be smaller than military ones, and they have less capacity, but they're excellent for exploring the sea.

  1. Just like ships, submarines have positive buoyancy, do you know what this means? Since their density is less than that of water, an upward push toward the surface is generated.
  2. For submarines to be able to sink, they need a density greater than that of water.
  3. For a submarine to sink it needs to reach a density greater than that of water. To do this, a series of tanks called ballast tanks, located in the front and rear, are flooded with water.
  4. In countries like China or Japan, submersibles capable of descending below 10,000 meters have been developed.
  5. In its beginnings, the submarine was created for warlike purposes, that is, for war. But nowadays there are submarines for scientific and civilian use. How cool!
  6. Nowadays there are submarines that can be controlled remotely, to access deep and dangerous areas. So much technology!
  7. The nuclear submarine uses radioactive elements as fuel, which are converted into electricity in a small reactor and give it autonomy. Fabulous!
  8. Do you think the submarine is a recent invention? It isn't! The first prototype of a submersible vessel dates back to the year 1602.
  9. Do you know what midget submarines are? They're submarines designed for coastlines and very shallow-water environments.
  10. In the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, in the year 1941, several midget submarines were used.
  11. The Tirpitz was a German battleship considered a “beast”; the British mini-submarines managed to damage it, but it was finally sunk by RAF bombers with powerful bombs.
  12. The first submarine was built in 1602 by the Dutchman Cornelius Drebbel, in the service of James I of England.
  13. Most civilian submarines have a capacity of between 25 and 50 passengers, and they can carry out 10 or more dives a day.

  22. The first military victory achieved by a submarine was won by the American Confederate captain Horace Hunley, and by the engineers McClintock and Watson.
  23. Hyman Rickover is considered the inventor of the nuclear submarine, in the year 1955, in the United States.
  24. The Spanish names of the three German mini submarines built for World War II were Castor, Foca and Salamandra.
  25. In 2019 the Russian nuclear submarine “Losharik” caught fire and 14 crew members died from inhaling toxic gas.
