  1. In Australia there is the “School of the Air,” a term that refers to the schools that broadcast lessons by radio for students who live in remote areas. How cool!
  2. In many Asian countries teachers are respected and considered as qualified as doctors, especially in China. That is, they are given a higher status.
  3. On May 15, 1950 Pope Pius XII declared Saint John Baptist de la Salle the Patron Saint of teachers.
  4. UNESCO in 1994, together with the International Labour Organization, published a document that sets out the rights and obligations of teachers.

  9. Nowadays education is a fundamental right, something that in ancient times was not considered as such. Before, studying was more a vital necessity than a right.
  10. The sophists, from classical Athens, are considered the first teachers in history.
  11. The term “sophist” means “wise” and refers to the people who “taught wisdom” in classical Athens.
  12. In the High Middle Ages, the “cleric” represented the greatest entity of education. Do you know what that means? That the church was in charge of education during that time.
  13. In Ancient Greece there were no schools for women or for slaves. Education was only concentrated on male children.
  14. Do you know who Socrates was? He was a Greek philosopher and one of the most important scientists and educators in the whole world. He is considered the father of Western philosophy.
  15. Confucius was a Chinese thinker, and he is considered the first teacher in China. He was important because in his time he wanted education to be available for everyone.
  16. In Colombia Teachers' Day is celebrated on May 15, also celebrating the day of Saint John Baptist de La Salle.
  17. In Peru Teachers' Day is celebrated on July 6, a celebration that began during the government of President Manuel Odría.
  18. In Spain Teachers' Day is celebrated on November 27, which corresponds to the day of celebration of Saint Joseph of Calasanz.
  19. The Russian Sofya Kovalevskaya is currently considered the first female professor in all of history.
  20. 69 million teachers are needed! According to UNESCO's Department of Statistics, to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals that many teachers will be necessary.
