  1. Dentists at the JJ Hospital in Bombay operated on a 17-year-old young man from India, who felt a strong toothache. After a 7-hour operation they extracted 232 teeth from his mouth.

  15. Adolph Witzel was a German specialist in dental health, who identified the bacteria that cause periodontal disease.
  16. Lucy Beaman Hobbs Taylor was the first woman dentist in the world. She obtained her diploma in 1866, at the Ohio College of Dental Surgery (USA).
  17. Hippocrates, a doctor from Ancient Greece, in the 4th century B.C., made specific references about dental malpositions, which today are problems corrected with braces.
  18. Pierre Fauchard, a French doctor, recognized for being the “father of dentistry” was the inventor of the dental filling used to treat cavities.
  19. According to a world health statistics report from the World Health Organization, there are almost 31 million health professionals in the world, of which, in 2011, almost 2 million were dentists.
  20. Josiah Flagg, an American dentist, created the first dental chair in history in 1790.
