  1. Roman numerals come from the Etruscans, a civilization that inhabited the Italian peninsula and that were assimilated by ancient Rome, who took and adapted their numerical system.
  2. The Roman numeral L (50) was originally symbolized as an arrowhead, over the years it gradually opened up until it was simplified into an L.
  3. At first the Roman numeral C (100) was represented with a figure very similar to two Cs back to back with a vertical line between them, over time these gradually separated until it was left with a single C.
  4. The Roman numeral M (one thousand) was originally represented with a circle and an X in the middle, therefore, 500 was represented with half of that symbol, over time this symbol was rotated 45° counterclockwise and due to its similarities with the letter D it ended up being adapted.
  5. The Romans did not use zero in their numerical system, but that does not mean they did not have their methods to represent nothing, one of the words they used was "nulla".
  6. If we apply the basic rules we know to form Roman numerals you will realize that the largest number we can represent is 3,999, so the Romans used a line over one or several numbers to multiply their value by a thousand.
  7. Roman numerals arose around the 7th and 4th centuries BC.
  8. Roman numerals are useful to us for naming centuries, naming kings, numbering parts of a series or movie and for anniversaries.
  9. Roman numerals stopped being used as frequently with the arrival of the Indo-Arabic numbering system in the 14th century AD.
  10. The letters that help us represent Roman numerals are I (1), V (5), X (10), L (50), C (100), D (500) and M (1000). These are placed from greatest to least, since when a lesser letter comes first it represents a subtraction from the next letter. Let's take 1999 as an example, its representation in Roman numerals is MCMXCIX.
