  1. Did you know that the skeleton of an adult human is made up of 206 bones? That is more than two hundred bony pieces!
  2. The smallest bone in the human skeleton is the stirrup. It is located in the middle ear and measures 2.5 to 3 millimeters. It is much smaller than an American five-cent coin!
  3. Did you know that the skeleton of a newborn human has between 275 and more than 300 bones? As we grow, these gradually fuse and are reduced to two thirds of their original number. Amazing!
  4. A little more than half of the bones in the human skeleton are concentrated in the hands and feet. This means that in total, we have more than a hundred bones between our two hands and two feet. Incredible!
  5. The longest, thickest, and strongest bones in the human skeleton are the femurs. They are two bones (one in each leg) that run from the pelvis to the knees. They are estimated to have a length equivalent to between 25 and 27% of each person's height.
  6. You have surely heard that the human skeleton is made up of 206 bones. Did you know that this figure does not include our teeth? If permanent teeth are considered when counting the parts of our skeleton, the figure would be between 234 and 238 pieces.
  7. Did you know that 22 of the more than 200 bones in the human skeleton are located in the skull and face? 8 of these belong to the skull and they are: one frontal, two parietal, two temporal, one occipital, one sphenoid, and one ethmoid.
  8. It is estimated that our skeleton makes up between 12 and 15% of our total body mass. If the bones that compose it were not hollow, their weight could quadruple. Incredible!
  9. To make studying the human skeleton easier, scientists have divided it into two parts: the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton. Great!

  13. Some of the most common skeletal diseases in the world are fractures, osteoporosis, bone cancer, osteomyelitis, osteogenesis imperfecta, achondroplasia, acromegaly, and rickets and osteomalacia.
  14. There are people whose skeleton has more bones than usual. 1 in 500 people is born with an extra rib called a cervical rib, and 1 in 500 people is born with polydactyly, or extra fingers or toes. Amazing!
  15. With a total length of about 25 meters, blue whales have the largest and longest skeleton that has ever existed. Impressive!
