- Carnations, also called pinks, are herbaceous plants with showy flowers that have more or less serrated edges.
- Did you know that carnations are literally the flowers of God? This is because the scientific name of carnations is Dianthus caryophyllus, and the word “Dianthus” comes from the Greek words “deos” which means God and “anthos” which means flower.
- Did you know that the carnation is the national flower of at least three countries? It holds that title in Spain, Monaco and Slovenia.
- The wild carnation blooms mainly in spring and summer, although if the environmental conditions are favorable, it can bloom for almost the whole year.
- The carnation is an aromatic flower. It has a sweet and penetrating fragrance that is highly valued in perfumery.
- White carnations are used in weddings in many cultures because they are said to symbolize pure love, peace, purity and good luck. In China and Spain it's very common to see them in brides' bouquets and table centerpieces. Awesome!
- It's believed that carnations originate from the Mediterranean region but it's hard to know for sure. This is because today and for more than 2,000 years, carnations have been cultivated in almost every corner of the world.
- Carnations are not only ornamental flowers, since they are also used to relieve headaches, eye irritation, conjunctivitis, dermatitis, muscle pain, asthma, nausea, swelling, anemia and pneumonia.
- According to Christian tradition, when the Virgin Mary saw Jesus Christ nailed to the cross, she wept tears that, upon touching the ground, turned into carnation petals.
- Carnations are one of the 10 most in-demand flowers in the world. Among the countries that export the most carnations are Colombia, Holland, Ecuador and Germany.
