  1. Pelé's real name was Edson Arantes do Nascimento. His parents named him Edson in honor of Thomas Edison, the inventor of the light bulb. What a curious fact!
  2. Pelé was born on October 23, 1940, in Três Corações, a small town in Brazil. As a little boy he played football in the street with balls made of socks and rags.
  3. He won three World Cups with Brazil: in 1958, 1962 and 1970. He is the only footballer in history to lift that trophy three times.
  4. When he won his first World Cup, in 1958, Pelé was only 17 years old. He is the youngest world champion in history, and he even scored two goals in the final.
  5. He is said to have scored more than 1000 goals during his career. He scored his 1000th goal in 1969 at the Maracanã stadium, and all of Brazil celebrated.
  6. He played almost his entire career at Santos, a club in Brazil. He was so important that his country declared him a national treasure so he would not leave for another team.
  7. He wore the shirt with the number 10. Since then that number became the most special in football, the one worn by the most creative players.
  8. His nickname, O Rei, means The King in Portuguese. He earned it for being the best player of his time.
  9. At the end of his career Pelé played for the New York Cosmos, in the United States, and helped make football popular there.
  10. FIFA chose him as one of the best footballers of the century. His name is known all over the world, even among people who do not watch football.
