  3. After Nicolaus Copernicus's sister died, he adopted her five children as if they were his own.
  4. As a member of the church, Nicolaus Copernicus took a vow of celibacy. So he never married and is believed to have died a virgin.
  5. Nicolaus Copernicus was orphaned at the age of 10, so his maternal uncle Lucas Watzenrode, a bishop and scholar, took charge of his care and education.
