Among the most incredible weather phenomena we have storms. Generally, they bring great cloudiness, accompanied by strong electrical rains that shake the earth.
Storms usually occur when a low-pressure center develops with a high-pressure system. In other words, there's a combination of opposing forces that are capable of creating strong winds, and consequently, dark clouds.

- Do you know the temperature of a lightning bolt? It's about 27,700 degrees Celsius. That's 5 times hotter than the surface of the sun!
- According to some calculations, Tropical Storm Claudette has been the most abundant in the history of the United States. It dumped about 1,066 millimeters of rain in 24 hours over Alvin, Texas in 1979, the largest amount ever recorded in a single day.
- It's possible for lightning to strike you even when it isn't raining. About 10% of lightning bolts are generated without precipitation. Incredible!
- "Summer storms" are also known by the name "air mass storms."
- The life cycle of a summer storm is 30 minutes, or at most, 1 hour.
- Lightning storms occur more in summer. How crazy, right? This is because more masses of warm air are generated that collide with masses of cold air, and when this happens, electricity is generated.
- Lightning can strike the same place twice. Incredible! It usually happens, especially, on tall, pointed, and isolated objects.
- The thunder you hear when it rains is nothing more than an acoustic effect of the lightning. It's produced because the heating of the lightning causes an ultrasonic pressure wave.
- The stormiest place in the world is in Venezuela, at Lake Maracaibo. It's known as the "Catatumbo Lightning." In this area there are more than 260 days of storms a year, generating approximately 1.7 million lightning bolts per year.
- Do you know what fulgurites are? They are tubes of natural glass that form when lightning strikes the sand and melts it with its heat. Incredible!
