Why color pictures of winter?

When winter arrives we are all looking for warm clothes, turning on the heater or the fireplace. And having hot chocolate at all hours! Because winter is the coldest time of the whole year. This season has the shortest days and the longest nights. Excellent for sleeping a little longer!

From the point of view of astronomy, it begins on December 21 and ends around March 21. Since it is characterized by the lowest temperatures, it usually snows in many countries.

  1. In winter the cloudless nights are the coldest. Had you noticed? This is because clouds work as a thermal layer that absorbs the Sun's heat during the day, and helps keep it until night.
  2. In Siberia there is a place called Oymyakon and there, its temperature dropped to -72.2°C in 1895 and in 1982. Imagine how cold!
  3. The lowest temperature ever recorded in the world was in Antarctica. On August 10, 2010, NASA recorded -92°C in the East Antarctic Plateau. Incredible!
  4. The winter solstice marks the shortest day of the year, when the Sun reaches its lowest point in the sky. In the northern hemisphere it happens around December 21, and in the south around June 21.
  5. One of the most common medical conditions that winter can cause is hypothermia. You have to bundle up very well in winter!
  6. In winter the Earth is closer to the sun. Around January 3 the Earth reaches perihelion, being about 5 million kilometers closer to the Sun.
  7. In 2015 a study was published in The Journal of Headache and Pain, where it was shown that many people experienced a greater number of headaches in winter compared to other seasons.
  8. The snowflakes that are formed by ice crystals are capable of trapping water vapor as they fall. The change from the gaseous state as water vapor to the solid state as ice releases heat. That is why when it snows there is a release of heat into the atmosphere.
  9. A study published in 2014 in Acta Psychologica found that people who were given a cup of hot tea in a room at high temperature were better at creative drawing. So they say that in winter, the cold stimulates abstract creativity.
  10. In winter there are fewer hours of sunlight. Fewer sun rays are received and therefore the skin produces less vitamin D.
