Why color Arc de Triomphe pictures?

The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most famous monuments in Paris. Napoleon Bonaparte ordered it to be built in 1806 to honor the soldiers of his army, and it took thirty years to finish. Today it is a symbol of France that millions of people visit every year.

Learn while coloring Arc de Triomphe

  1. The Arc de Triomphe was ordered by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1806, after his victory at the battle of Austerlitz. He wanted to honor the soldiers of his army, the famous Grande Armée.
  2. It took thirty years to build. Work started in 1806 and it was not finished until 1836. Napoleon never got to see it completed!
  3. It stands almost 50 meters tall, about the height of a fifteen-story building. It is one of the largest triumphal arches in the world.
  4. The arch sits in the middle of a big square where twelve avenues spread out like a star. That is why it used to be called the Place of the Star.
  5. Beneath the arch rests the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in memory of those who died in World War I. A flame has been lit there every evening since 1923 and never goes out.
  6. The design of the Arc de Triomphe was inspired by the Arch of Titus, a very old arch the Romans built almost two thousand years ago.
  7. If you climb the 284 steps inside, you reach a terrace with a view over the Champs-Élysées avenue and a big part of Paris.
  8. The names of hundreds of generals and battles of the French army are carved on its walls. It is like a history book written in stone!
  9. In 1919, a pilot named Charles Godefroy flew his plane underneath the arch to celebrate the end of World War I. He went right through the middle!
