A legend tells that when Cadmus was founding Thebes, letters did not yet exist. He killed snakes and gathered 16 teeth as a symbol of the first 16 letters, and the one that summed it all up by its sound and shape was the S. This legend belongs to one of the theories about the origin of the letter S.
